SERGIO DANIEL CANO ORTIZ

Mr. Cano received the Diploma Engineer from University of Oriente , Santiago de Cuba, Cuba in 1982, Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Technical Science (PhD) from Czech University of Technology in 1987 and 1990 respectively. Since 82 he has held many teaching and research positions with the Department of Electrotechnology, University of Oriente. He was an Invited Professor at University of Valladolid (Spain) in 92 and 94 for three months. In 93 he was an Invited Professor and a Research Supervisor at National University of Engineering (UNI, Managua-Nicaragua). A PhD lecturer in the Dept. of Informatics, University of Valladolid (Spain) in February 1998. Prof.Cano was involved as a Visiting Researcher at Artificial Intelligence Lab, Free University of Brussels (Belgium) working on self-organizing algorithms for cry classification during 3 months in 1998. He taught a Course and a Master conference at the CCBOL’98, Tomas Frias University in Potosi (Bolivia). Once more as a Visiting Researcher at AI Lab in Brussels in 2000 working on cry classification and language acquisition. He has been working in several research areas as: electric & electronic circuit simulation, power system management, analysis & recognition of speech signals, medical applications of speech processing. Currently his main research interests are: infant cry analysis as diagnostic tool, related neurodevelopment assessment techniques, child behavioral patterns and the origins of language. He has taught some matters like theory of circuits I,II,III and IV, electrotechnology I & II, computation and speech processing and its applications. He has published over 15 scientific papers and he has been participated in several international events and symposiums (he was one of the chairmans of the International Symposium of Social communication sponsored by Cuban Academy of Science). He speaks English, Czech and French languages. He is also the Cuban representant in the AIRENE Iberoamerican Project (under CYTED subprogramme no. 7). Dr.Cano is actually the Dean of Faculty of Electrical Engineering at University of Oriente.
