Sergio D. Cano Ortiz

Visiting Researcher on Artificial Intelligence Lab, VUB

Presently, I am the head of the Group of Speech processing at the University of Oriente, Cuba. My main research interests are concerned with the Speech and pre-speech processing and language acquisition process. I have been two times a visiting researcher at AI lab led by Prof. Steels working on the use of self-organizing maps for cry classification and themes concerned with language acquisition. I intend to develop a scientific collaboration with ARTI Lab on the origin of languages, based on our experiences with Infant Cry Analysis and pre-speech processing.

Many of the linguistically salient aspects of human speech begin to develop and can be seen in the vocal behavior of infants. Moreover it is quite proved that infants begin to imitate the intonation occuring in their native language at a very early age. Using our results in the cry acoustical analysis for more than 10 years, some interesting aspects about the acquisition process of speech and language by children could be studied, i.e. pitch contour, imitation of intonation, prosodic analysis, formant analysis, etc.
